PS/PR/Comm(LXII) Page 1 COMMUNIQUE OF THE 62ND MEETING OF THE PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) at its 62 Meeting held on 13 September 2006, adopted the following decision on the deployment plan of the IGAD Peace Support Mission to Somalia (IGASOM): nd Council, 1. Takes note of the report of the Military Staff Committee on the deployment plan of IGASOM, as well as the briefings by the Ambassador of Kenya, representing the Chairman of IGAD, and the Ambassador of Somalia; 2. Welcomes the Communiqué adopted by the Extraordinary Summit of IGAD held in Nairobi, on 5th September 2006; 3. Welcomes also the outcome of the second round of peace talks held in Khartoum, between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia and the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), facilitated by the League of Arab States (LAS), which concluded with the adoption of a Final Communiqué by the two parties on 4 September 2006. Council reiterates its full support for the dialogue among Somali parties and encourages them to pursue their efforts, based on the Transitional Federal Charter of Somalia; 4. Reiterates its commitment to the unity, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Somalia; 5. Recalls its previous decisions on the deployment of the IGAD peace support mission in Somalia (IGASOM); 6. Decides to approve the deployment plan of IGASOM, as reviewed by the Military Staff Committee. In this respect, IGASOM will undertake the tasks aimed at providing security support for the Transitional Federal Institutions (TFIs), institutional capacity building and creating conducive conditions for dialogue and reconciliation in Somalia; 7. Stresses the need for creating the most propitious political conditions for the deployment of IGASOM and securing necessary financial and logistical support for the deployment of the Mission; 8. Requests the Commission, working closely with IGAD, to take all necessary steps, including consultations with the European Union (EU) and other partners, in order to mobilize the required funding and logistical support for the deployment of IGASOM in Somalia as soon as possible;
