COMMUNIQUE OF THE 39TH MEETING OF THE PEACE
AND SECURITY COUNCIL
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 39th
meeting held on 30 September 2005, adopted the following decision on the status of
implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in the Sudan :
Council,
1.
Congratulates the leaders and people of the Sudan for the successful formation
of the Government of National Unity (GoNU), which is an important step towards the full
implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and encourages all the
Parties comprising the new Government to continue serving the people of the Sudan.
Council further encourages the Southern Sudan authorities to form the Government of
Southern Sudan (GoSS), as soon as possible;
2.
Urges the Government of National Unity to expeditiously form the relevant
Committees, which would oversee the implementation of the CPA, and to resolve any
other outstanding matters that may hinder the realization of peace in the Sudan;
3.
Commends the International Community, in particular the United Nations and its
specialized agencies, as well as other multilateral and bilateral donors, for the continued
support given to the people of the Sudan, and further urges the international community
to fulfill the pledges made at the Oslo Donors Conference to allow for meaningful
progress to be made in the post conflict reconstruction of the Sudan;
4.
Takes note of the efforts being made by the AU Ministerial Committee on PostConflict Reconstruction in the Sudan, including the planned conference on Africa’s
contribution to post-conflict reconstruction, scheduled for early January 2006, and the
preparatory experts meeting of Member States, scheduled for November 2005. Council
welcomes the decision taken by the Committee to undertake, as soon as possible, an
assessment mission to the Sudan, with a view to providing further political and other
support to the ongoing process.
