PSC/PR/Comm(XLIX) Page 1 COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE 49TH PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING ON THE SITUATION IN CHAD The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 49th meeting, held on 13 April 2006, considered the situation in Chad and decided as follows: Council, 1. Expresses its grave concern at the prevailing situation in Chad; 2. Strongly condemns the attacks perpetrated by rebel movements in Chad, as an unacceptable attempt to overthrow the current Government through unconstitutional means. Council also strongly condemns the incursions of armed elements into Sudanese refugee camps in Chad and other acts contrary to international humanitarian law; 3. Stresses the need for the Government of Chad to urgently initiate a dialogue with all the political forces in the country, with a view to finding a consensual solution to the problems facing Chad and to consolidating the democratic process in the country. In this respect, Council encourages the Chairperson of the Commission, to do his utmost to facilitate such a dialogue; 4. Decides to remain seized of the matter and requests the Commission to continue to follow closely the situation and to report to it as soon as possible.
