COMMUNIQUE
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union, at its 48th
meeting, held on 6 April 2006, adopted the following decision on the ongoing InterSudanese Peace Talks on the situation in Darfur.
Council,
1.
Takes note of the Report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the status
of the ongoing Abuja Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks on the situation in Darfur
No. PSC/PR/1(XLVIII);
2.
Further takes note of the briefing by the Special Envoy and Chief Mediator,
Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, on the status of the ongoing Abuja Inter-Sudanese
Talks on the Conflict in Darfur;
3.
Commends the Special Envoy and his Mediation team for the progress made
and encourages them to pursue their efforts towards an early conclusion of
the Talks;
4.
Urges the Parties to expeditiously conclude and sign the draft Enhanced
Ceasefire Agreement submitted to them by the AU Mediation. Requests the
Chairperson of the Commission to cause AMIS to urgently draw up and
submit contingency plans on the requirements for implementing the
commitments envisaged in the draft Enhanced Ceasefire Agreement;

Further requests the Mediation to submit to the parties, as quickly as
possible, final compromise proposals for a Comprehensive Darfur Peace
Agreement, with the continued support of the International Community. In this
regard, Council strongly urges all the Parties, to fully cooperate with the AU
Mediation Team and to reach an agreement within the time frame of the end
of April 2006 set at its 46th meeting on 10th March 2006;

Decides to remain actively seized of the Darfur issue.
