DECISION ON THE SIGNING OF THE COMPREHENSIVE PEACE
AGREEMENT (CPA) BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE SUDAN (GoS)
AND THE SUDAN PEOPLES’ LIBERATION MOVEMENT/ARMY (SPLM/A)
The Assembly:
1.
WELCOMES AND APPLAUDS the signing of the Comprehensive Peace
Agreement between the GoS and the SPLM/A, in Nairobi, Kenya, on 9
January 2005, and CONGRATULATES the Parties for this landmark
agreement which brings to an end the longest running conflict in Africa;
2.
EXPRESSES ITS APPRECIATION for the positive diplomatic and
material contributions of the IGAD Member States, and of specially,
Kenya, which hosted the long negotiations for the successful conclusion
of the Talks;
3.
FURTHER EXPRESSES APPRECIATION the diplomatic, financial and
political contributions of the international community at large, and of the
IGAD Partner’s Forum, in particular, who tirelessly played pivotal roles
throughout the negotiations;
4.
REMAINS COMMITTED to accompany the Sudanese Parties during the
Interim Period as they consolidate their hard-won peace and embark on
the difficult tasks of reconciliation and post-conflict reconstruction.
