COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE FOURTEENTH MEETING OF
THE PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 14th Meeting
held on 9 August 2004, under the chairmanship of the Permanent Representative of
the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, adopted the following Communiqué on
the crisis in the Darfur region of the Sudan:
Council,
1.
Reaffirms the need for all the Sudanese parties, namely the Government of
the Sudan (GoS), the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudanese
Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), to honour their commitments under the
Humanitarian Ceasefire Agreement of 8 April 2004 and to comply with the relevant
decisions of the African Union;
2.
Expresses satisfaction at the announcement of the resumption of the
political dialogue between the Sudanese Parties in Abuja, Nigeria, on 23 August
2004. In this connection, Council pays tribute to the Current Chairman of the AU
and the Chairperson of the AU Commission for the efforts made;
3.
Requests the Sudanese Parties to be represented at the highest level at the
Abuja Talks and urges all the AU Member States and Partners to give the necessary
support to ensure the success of the Talks;
4.
Expresses satisfaction at the progress made in the establishment of the AU
Mission in Darfur, including the Protection Force;
5.
Reiterates the need for the AU to continue to lead the efforts aimed at
solving the crisis obtaining in the Darfur region. In this connection, Council
expresses satisfaction at the support which the United Nations, the European
Union (EU), the League of Arab States and the bilateral Partners are giving to the
AU;
6.
Reiterates the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance to the
civilians affected by the crisis;
7.
Decides to remain actively seized with the matter.
