The AWA “Secretariat” was set up in December 2007 with the appointment of one Head of Division under the department of Social Affairs. With the support of partners and in collaboration with CSOs and some Member States, the Secretariat has accomplished the following: • • • • • Developed the AU Commission HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan, together with the AWA Strategic Framework: some of the planned activities have been undertaken but not others Organized the Meetings of AWA during the January and July 2007 AU assemblies Organized the September 2006 and February 2007 Meetings of AWA advisors Prepared a few briefs for the AWA or AU Chairperson prior to the G8, UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS As coordinator for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, coordinated the following: - Continental Forum which developed the Framework on the Human Rights of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS (Nov. 2005); - Continental Consultation which adopted the Brazzaville Commitment on Scaling Up Towards Universal Access to HIV/AIDS Prevention, Treatment, care and support (March 2006); - Special Summit on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, Abuja, May 2006 which adopted: (i) (ii) (iii) • Abuja Call for Accelerated Action Africa’s Common Position to the UNGASS on HIV/AIDS (June 2006); Endorsed the above Brazzaville Commitment on Scaling Up Towards Universal Access to HIV/AIDS Prevention, Treatment, care and support and Framework on Human Rights of People Infected and Affected by HIV/AIDS.
