Assembly/AU/8(II) Add. 3 The Assembly: Concerned about the rapid degrading of the African environment as a result of adverse global changes; Recalling the environmental aspects of the Millennium Declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2000, Recalling the adoption of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) as a programme of the African Union (AU) by the African Heads of State and Government in Lusaka, Zambia, in July 2001, Recalling the relevant decision on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Programme (NEPAD) by the Group of the Eight major industrialized countries (G8) and other partners, Recalling the Plan of Implementation adopted by the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, from 26 August to 4 September 2002 and its chapter 8 on sustainable development for Africa, Considering the United Nations Declaration on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development adopted on 16 September 2002 by the General Assembly, at a high-level plenary meeting, Considering the results of the Conference on the Role of the Private Sector in Financing the New Partnership for Africa’s Development held in Dakar in April 2003, Considering the decision of the Second Special Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment held in Maputo from 9 to 10 June 2003 to forward the Action Plan of the Environment Initiative of NEPAD for consideration by the second ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union and the third ordinary session of the African Union Executive Council to be held in Maputo, Mozambique from 4 to 12 July 2003: 1. NOTES the outcome of the Second Special Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment held in Maputo, Mozambique from 9 to 10 June 2003 which adopted the Action Plan of the Environment Initiative of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development; 2. APPRECIATES the support extended by partners, particularly the United Nations Environment Programme and the Global Environment Facility in the development of the Action Plan of the Environment Initiative of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development; 3. ENDORSES the Action Plan of the Environment Initiative of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development; 4. INVITES the Commission of the African Union, the NEPAD Secretariat, the UNEP and other partners to pursue their co-operation in order to give effective support to all Member States and the RECs in the implementation of the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan;
