Since AWA Secretariat shifted to the AU Commission, the Members have held two Meetings, alongside the AU Assemblies: (a) January 2006, Khartoum, Sudan, where the following decisions were taken: - - Each concerned Head of State and Government would be consulted and given a chance to select an area of his own choice The close relationship between HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria should be acknowledged. In line with this recommendation, the May 2006 Abuja Special Summit on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria was organised National Advisors on HIV/AIDS from the whole continent should meet more frequently, particularly those from the hardest hit countries Funds saved from debt cancellation/relief programmes should be dedicated to HIV/AIDS (b) July 2006, Banjul, The Gambia, where it was recommended that: - - The Advisors to AWA Heads of State and Government be brought together to prepare Action Plans for each AWA Member to carry out his allocated responsibility; and coordinate related advocacy; The AU Commission to coordinate the follow-up on the implementation of the AWA Strategic Framework and report biannually to the Awa Chairperson. Advisors on HIV/AIDS to AWA Members 10. The July 2006 AWA Meeting recommended that the Advisors to AWA Heads of State and Government meet as soon as possible and consider how they will coordinate the activities of the respective Members. 11. The Advisors subsequently met in September 2006 and February 2007. They collectively considered the responsibilities allocated to AWA Members and how they could coordinate them more effectively. Among others, they recommended the following: - AWA Advisors to collect, analyse and disseminate strategic information; - Networking and sharing of information and best practices be promoted; - Resource mobilization for activities be undertaken; - Capacity building and Secretariat development at AU headquarters, New York and Geneva AU Offices be undertaken;
