Box: 3243 Tel.: (251-11) 5513 822 Fax: (251-11) 5519 321 Email: situationroom@africa-union.org PRESS RELEASE AU COMMISSION AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON PROVISION OF SUPPORT TO THE GRAND BASSA COMMUNITY COLLEGE Addis Ababa, 25 January 2017: The Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui, on behalf of the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma signed, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, H.E. Mrs. Marjon V. Kamara, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to contribute US$50,000 for the procurement of furniture and office equipment for the Grand Bassa Community College (GBCC) Paynesberry Campus in Liberia. This MoU was signed within the framework of the AU Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy (PCRD) and African Solidarity Initiative (ASI). The signed MoU aims to establish the terms and conditions under which the Commission and Government of the Republic of Liberia will cooperate in a coherent manner for the purpose of implementation of the Project, the principles which shall govern its execution. Following the official signing ceremony, H.E. Mrs. Marjon Kamara expressed her gratitude to the AU Commission, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia. The Minister noted that the contribution will enhance the decentralization programs of her government, which is geared towards taking development initiatives beyond the confines of the capital, Monrovia. In his remarks, Ambassador Chergui, stated that the contribution is a token gesture by the AU Commission to the Government and people of Liberia, adding that a more robust relationship will be nurtured in the near future through the engagement of the AU Liaison Office in the country.
